Any light-triggered unit worth buying has an adjustable delay: the sensor crosses its threshold, then waits 5–30 minutes before the motor runs. Set it near the top of that range — light falls from about 400 lux at sunset to a few lux by the end of civil twilight, and a stubborn hen needs those minutes.

Read the right-hand column as a maintenance schedule. Between late February and April, then again from late August to October, a fixed close time falls an hour out of step every six weeks. Two specs decide whether the unit survives year two. Obstruction detection is the first: a motor that senses resistance, stops, and reverses instead of forcing a 2–3 lb panel onto a bird's neck.
