Best Hydroponic Nutrients Compared: Cost Per Gallon and Crop Fit
A gallon of nutrient solution costs 8 cents mixed from dry salts and about $1.10 poured from the bottle that shipped with a countertop garden. Both deliver the same elements — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and seven micronutrients — at close to the same ratios. What differs is packaging and how much water you paid to ship. Over a year on one 5-gallon reservoir that gap is $16 against $200.
What you are actually buying: parts, not brands
Hydroponic fertilizers descend from the solution-culture recipes of the mid-20th century — Hoagland and Arnon's 1950 formulation is the reference most blends still trace back to. The elements are settled; the products differ in packaging.
The split into parts is chemistry, not marketing: calcium nitrate cannot share a concentrated bottle with sulfates or phosphates, because it precipitates into a gypsum sludge that never reaches a root. Any full diet therefore arrives in two containers or more, and a single-bottle "complete" fertilizer is either dilute enough to slow that reaction or short on calcium.

The bottom two rows carry warnings. Organic liquids feed through microbial breakdown — fine in coco or a media bed, a source of biofilm and clogged emitters in bare-root systems. Matching the formula to the crop
One product line covers a home grower's whole list. Leafy greens want a weaker solution with nitrogen leading; fruiting crops want it stronger, potassium and calcium climbing as flowers set. That is a dose change, not another purchase. Target strengths sit in the nutrients and pH guide; the table turns them into money.

Set against retail, a head of lettuce selling for $2.50 carries 9–18 cents of fertilizer, and a plant yielding 10–15 lb of fruit carries 15–25 cents a pound. Nothing on this shelf decides whether a home system pays — the tomato cost and yield math turns on light and season length.
What the bottle does not cover
Add-ons are where a cheap dry kit quietly doubles.
- Calcium-magnesium supplement, $12–18 a quart. At 5 mL per gallon it adds 6–10 cents a gallon, as much as the base nutrient — needed on reverse-osmosis or very soft water, wasted on hard tap already carrying 100+ ppm of calcium.
- pH Down, $10–14 a quart. At 1–2 mL per gallon a quart treats 470–950 gallons, under a cent each; high-carbonate water burns through it faster.
- Meters and calibration fluid, $22–45 up front, plus $8–12 a year of buffer. Without them the nutrient choice is guesswork.
- Your water itself. Tap starting at 200–300 ppm leaves less headroom before target strength, and that load is mostly calcium and sodium.
Where nutrients sit in the real budget
Take one 5-gallon deep water culture bucket run year-round, changed every two weeks plus top-ups: roughly 180 gallons a year. Dry salts at 9 cents make that $16, a quart liquid set at 18 cents makes it $32, kit sachets at $1.10 make it $198.
Against that, a 100 W LED at 14 hours a day draws 511 kWh and costs $85–130 a year, while pump, seeds and net pots add $30–60. Common mistakes, in numbers
- Mixing concentrates together before diluting. Pouring part A into part B undiluted drops the calcium out in seconds. Add each to the full water volume separately, stirring between.
- Buying a bloom booster for lettuce. A $20 phosphorus supplement does nothing for a 35-day leaf crop wanting 560–840 ppm with nitrogen leading.
- Dosing by the cap instead of to a meter. Label rates assume near-zero starting solids; on 250 ppm tap water, full-label strength lands 20–30% over target.
- Paying $1.10 a gallon for sachets in a $200 machine. Three years of that is $600 of fertilizer in a device that cost less.
